Our bantham rooster got attacked by a raccoon 2 nights ago. He was traumatized, but was walking around ok yesterday... Checked him this morning and apparently his left wing is broken and he's drooling.

I'm so worried we'll have to put him down. We've had him forever, so he is old... Maybe 10 years?

So would putting him down be the best option? Is there hope that he'll heal from his injuries? I know the wing can heal, but the drooling really concerns me.

Thoughts?

Poor thing. Could he be in shock? Any internal injuries? Have you given him sugar water? Checked his crop?

No, didn't think about sugar water. What's the best way to give it to him? Just in a bowl? Or with a plastic syringe?

And his crop looks more wrinkly than usual, and not as bright.

I don't know if he's eating... Probably not since he didn't eat the mealworms I offered him. 😢

From google:

"You can make an electrolyte solution for chickens by mixing 1 tablespoon of sugar, 1 tablespoon of baking soda, and 1 teaspoon of salt into 1 gallon of water. You should only give electrolytes to chickens as needed and for a few days at a time."

When you say his crop looks wrinkly and not as bright, are you talking about his comb? The crop is in the neck/chest of the chicken. It's where food is kept before it drops into the stomach.

Thank you for the electrolyte recipe! And link. 😉

Yes, I meant comb. 🤦🏻‍♀️ But to be honest, they both look wrinkly and dull. They were bright and perky before the attack... But maybe he's getting dehydrated??

I'll try that electrolyte solution and check out the link. Thanks!

Do you notice any nasty smell coming from his mouth? If he's not eating and he's drooling, I'm thinking it's a crop issue and/or injury. A bad smell would indicate sour crop.

If his crop feels mooshy or really hard there's definitely a problem there.

I’m so sorry about your rooster. Nuthatched is right that is old, but you can still try if you’d like. Putting him down may be the kind thing to do depending on the extend of his injuries, too, though.

If you choose to try, you will first need to treat him for shock. Dribble some electrolyte solution mixed with sugar water onto his beak or gently dip his beak into the solution to get him interested. Something like Gatorade or pedialyte at room temp will work also. Next he will need to be kept somewhere warm, dim and quiet to recover. As soon as he is stable treat his injuries. Where is his wing broken at? Does he have any open wounds?

We'll try to heal him up, but yes, he most likely won't recover... But it's worth a try... He's still strong. 🤞

Not sure where it's broken... It's hanging at his side... Not super low... Kind of hard to tell.

No, there's no smell... I'll check to see how his crop feels. He does have some redness in between his toes, but no blood... No visible signs of injury other than the broken wing.

Making electrolyte water now...

@Everyone Thanks for the advice! It's all much appreciated!! 🥰

I'll let y'all know how he does.🐓♥️

If anyone else has any further knowledge, I'm open to hear it!

UPDATE:

Just gave him some electrolyte water... He seemed to like it!

His comb is actually looking way better than early this morning and he's getting feisty again...

So either there's hope... OR it's like how people get really good right before they die. 🤷🏻‍♀️🙏

I'll be checking those links and giving him electrolytes throughout the day.

I'll update as things change.

Thanks all!!
