I did top and bottom on my run. I only have a double layer of chicken wire on the roof of the run, and hardware cloth all the way around the run. I also have a rather elaborate hardware hook and latch configuration on the door going into the run. The three door hinges are held in place with 3 1/2" screws. If a 'coon figures out a way to get in there, I'll need to remove it from the gene pool ASAP
A raccoon can grab through hardware cloth or any wire with an opening bigger than 1/2" square and rip the chickens head and limbs off. Chickens panic and the raccoons sometimes work as a team!. Our coop will be totally covered with 1/2 " hardware cloth secured to 2x4's and covered with a roof--the entire coop. The roof gives shade too in the summer. Those darn raccoons cause us to spend so much more money!!

This is the best picture I currently have. You can see the wire at the top of the run thanks to the yellow insulators. The bottom wire is held in place with the stakes and clips. It's one continuous strand of wire. I have a solar charger that seems to be working quite well. Rigging the hot wire was WAAAAYYYYYY easier than digging and building the run
