I have a 8 foot high chain link fence run that I keep my chickens in during the day only. It is connected to my coop that has a door to keep them on at night.
Is this raccoon safe? I know they can climb trees so I can only assume they will climb the fence but if they are cooped up at night they should be safe, I hope.
I only ever see one coon around are property and it comes around every fall and tackles my garbage.. Same old coon but its a big one!

I used 2x3 welded wire around run, for the roof of the run, and for a 2 foot skirt outside the run.
Many, many visible signs of attempted attacks during the night.

For four years this worked perfectly, protecting my small flock from raccoons, possums, fox, dogs, and predatory birds.

A few weeks ago a raccoon decided to visit while the birds were still out.

My bantam rooster did his thing while the raccoon did his, all through the 2x3 fence.
I still miss my little rooster.

I now have 1/2 inch hardware cloth surrounding the bottom 2 feet of the run.

Many think differently and are willing to accept loses, but for me, there is no worse feeling than raising and being solely responsible for an animal's well being, then burying it because you did not do everything possible to ensure its safety.

Aww how sad for your rooster..:(

This is my first time owning chickens, Ive only had ducks/geese. Whenever one would come up missing, parts were found in the yard, or a casualty in the road..:( it would always break my heart. This is why I will not let my chickens free range and want to try and protect them the best I can.

Thank you for the advice.
