My Coop
My Coop
Hi all. We found out today that we have raccoons in the area, not a normal thing in my neighborhood! I have a padlock on the coop door, but how do you all secure your pop doors if you have them?

Simple solution if raccoons are a real problem. Add a HASP to the pop door with a screw lock carabiner.

I've also seen other people create self locking doors, but I'm not that good at building things.

Thanks! I haven't seen them myself but they're being reported by neighbors. I was thinking something like this would be necessary.

If you look at my trailer coop build, I just added doors which will not allow a raccoon to lift it. Pretty easy to modify an existing door for this if that's your situation. For my door, they could still get it open by pulling a line but that'll be addressed later (plus it's the 3rd or 4th line of defense).

I use an automatic door. I had to install a strip of plastic to create a slot for the bottom of the door to set in to prevent raccoon hands from getting under it. My coop is within my run, so I also ran electric fence 6" and 12" around the bottom of the run. No issues in over a year since doing this, and I still have lots of raccoons around.
