Raccoons Found Us-UPDATE

Same here. have one, have and will use it if I have to. Best thing folks can do is have their kids go through a firearms training class so they know how to act around guns. You may not have one but if they go to a friends house they will know what to do if one is not locked up. I dont mean shoot it. I mean how to safely handle it and insure no one gets hurt.

I wouldn't want to raise any livestock without having the option of using a gun to deal with predators. I have a soft spot for all animals but when it comes down to something trying to harm any of my own animals I want to do everything I can to protect them. My only problem is that my husband needs to teach me how to shoot so I don't find myself in a bad situation when he's not home.

Even if you hate guns. GET ONE. A simple pump 20 guage shot gun will go a long way in protecting your flock. Traps usually do not work with racoons, they are just too darn smart and they will eat your chickens before they eat anything else. We had two pigeons on our front porch that were killed THROUGH THE BARS OF THE CAGE by a racoon.. It was very sad.

If you do not feel comfortable with a shot gun, get a 22 that has a laser light for aiming. Shoot the darn things or they will make your coop the hot spot of their NIGHTLY travels. You may think they are cute little guys. I would not hesitate to kill them. If people think that a coon will not attack without being next to water, they are sadly mistaken.

None of my guns have killed nearly many things as a coon will in chicken coop. I keep one on me at all times. If someone comes through that frontdoor or a window I don't want to have to excuse myself to another room to get my gun. My kids can't mess with my gun. It's holstered and on my hip. They can't hit the trigger due to the design of the holster. I'm the second line of defense. Prayers being the first. 9-1-1 is the third (we live out in the country and they can't get out here fast). Criminals shouldn't have the advantage and neither should fourlegged chicken killers. My family is full of retired law enforement officers and many of them have said the same thing ............. the victim was laying in the frontroom deceased with a handgun in the drawer of the nightstand. A gun in a drawer is as good as a rock in the yard when you can't get to it. Just my opinion and some from my kin. Always practice safe firearm use and control and teach your kids about guns just like you do about not petting strange dogs or playing with matches. (Putting soap box away now) If I didn't care what happened to my chciken buddies here I wouldn't post this. Be safe, your chickens and family members need you.

Well, after a few days of no coon sightings I came across a dead racoon in the road, right next to our driveway. Hmmm...wonder what the little bugger was doing so close to our house? Turns out it was my brother-in-law, and father-in-law that hit the coon around 10:30 Wednesday night. I'm sure it was one of the coons that we saw last week, but got away.
