I collect rain water in barrels to water my garden with, Would that water be safe for my chickens?

We free range our Buff's and their main water supply is outside so it gets rained in no side effects yet, might depend on where you live...

I would say yes, my uncle does the same thing

Depends- any algae in it?
What about wild bird droppings from running off roof?

I collect rainwater from the barn and use in my garden, but not for the hens, I water them from the well.

I use my rain water for my chickens. The only thing I would be worried about is if your water is from run off from your roof. Thinking about what type of material your roof is made of and if they would be dangerous for the chickens.

I've used rainwater off the roof for years with no problems.
Another good source is water from a basement dehumidifier.
Collect it in summer and use it throughout the winter.
