Raising chickens in the city.

My Name is michael and I live in a small town I have tasted fresh free range chicken eggs and want to raise just a couple of chickens myself for eggs. First question is how do I find out if I can keep chickens in my town, and second what breed would be the best to keep. Quiet and gentle. I live in michigan so they would have to be cold hardy. I would also like a coupe that is visually appealing, possibly a tractor type coupe that I can move around the yard. I would only like to keep a couple chickens and would like large brown eggs. There is myself, wife and two teenage daughters to provide for. Any information anyone can give me would be much appreciated.

Hello Michael, I would talk to the extension office of the city you live in or the courthouse...someone there will know the rules for city ordinances. I have Cochins, they are very gently and lay ok, another is the Buckeye they lay ok and are gentle..Brahmas are good layers of winter time eggs..and all the chickens I named are cold hardy..the list goes on.
