Raising Chickens in Tucson!

Welcome!
On the topic of scratch or crack corn...I noticed my better half was going behind my back and tossing out handfuls feeling sorry for the little beggars. I normally reserve just a little for tempting them back in the coop so I can lock them up at night and we're all happy. So...I mixed wild bird seed, all flock and layer pellets with it so said spouse can toss away without any detrimental effects.
I had to explain chickens are technically hogs with feathers so don't fall for their lies and over feed them junk food.

Hi and welcome to BYC :frow We're so happy you've decided to join us:ya

Oats and barley are a super food for chickens that they can get too much of. Hence the basic 10% rule, make sure treats don't exceed 10% of total diet. When Oats and barley exceed a certain percentage of total diet (the number is widely debated) they act as a nutrient blocker instead of a super food. Scratch is like any treat and will dilute overall protein provided by the feed. Easy to think of it as chicken candy. As long as you stay within the 10% rule it shouldn't matter what you choose to use as a treat.
