Hey everyone!

I have plans on getting my chicks from a local store on September 4th. The coop is all but ready.

Do you guys have a suggestion on how many weeks/days I should give them less heat, etc.?

Basically I am just asking for when you guys take your chicks to the coop, when you make their heat lamp further away from them, when you change their main food source, and things like that.

Thanks!

There is a thread here called' mama heating pad' where they use a heating pad cave instead of heat lamps. Looks like a much better idea to me

They need a heat source until they are feathered in. That usually takes about 6 to 8 weeks. If the nights are over 75-80* then they can go without heat sooner. You feed them chick starter or grower until they start laying eggs. Then, you can switch them to layer feed, or if you have a rooster or two, keep them on grower and supplement the hens with crushed oyster shell in a separate dish.
