Raising livestock, whether in your backyard or in the country can be rewarding. But, it does have its heartaches, as well. I received chicks yesterday and had a very small (runt) in the bunch. In the animal world it is survival of the fittest and chicks are no exception. The runt passed away today not by anything anyone did, but just that she was just not ready. In the wild, a momma would her left her behind to save the flock. It is sad, but it is a fact of life. It is fine for us as humans to be sad because we have the capacity to feel empathy and compassion for loss. We all have to move on and protect the rest of the herd/flock.

Sorry you lost the little one. Sometimes those runts surprise you and hang in there, and other times it's all too much for them. :hmm
