I was thinking of starting to raise some quail. I live in city limits so I was wondering if the males are loud like roosters, if so I wouldn't be able to. I was also wondering if anyone keep quail for the eggs to eat.

the males even when calling their mating call are no where near as loud as a rooster calling. Even though it doesnt sound like a whistle, i'd say whistle, and if you think that's too loud, you probably wont want quail. Now if you have a thousand quail, THEN they may be loud

The males aren't nearly as loud as roosters or even as loud as a barking dog. Depends on how many you have, though. I had five in my livingroom and that was wayyyyy too loud for me when they all started crowing for hens at all hours.

I eat quail eggs, I sell quail eggs to people to eat, I pickle them and eat them and sell them..

Commercial egg or home raised egg? They taste more like home raised eggs, and they have a higher yolk to white ratio than a chicken egg.

Commercial eggs are icky, imnsho.

I think their eggs are absolutely delicious! we have several quail in the house the females sound like crickets it's so cute and the males are hilarious... We now only have one male in the house and he never crows as long as we keep him with the ladies... Now take him out of the cage and he goes nuts...

If you are only wanting eggs to eat I would suggest just keeping the females and maybe keep 2-3 males so you can breed them for hatching eggs the next year... The males are the noisy ones...

We raise ours for the eggs and they are soooo easy to take care of... We raise the Texas A&M and they give really big eggs for quail... our females lay an egg every day like clockwork from 8 weeks on... With our quail eggs it only takes about 2-3 to equal a large chicken egg... Regular quail take about 5 eggs
