I have a crested duck for the first time and boy is she loud. She scream quacks constantly. All the others only do so when they think I have Mealworms or are coming to murder them. They have quiet quacks around the water bowl. I call this the Coffee clatch quack. The medium quack for we've been released from the coop and only scream quack when they are frightened or very excited. She scream quacks through everything. Is this a crested thing? Could she be hearing impaired? It used to scare the others but they seem to have accepted her idiosyncrasies. Hope they don't every make her lookout duck.

I noticed right off the bat that our 1 black crested runner is way louder and more feisty than the other girls. She seemed especially at first to be the ringleader. When we separated her from the others she just did her distress chirp, loud and clear with no stop til we put her back. They are all calmer and easier to handle now but she still fights a bit and makes more noise than the other girls.

My personal theory was that a lot of crested ducklings are sick and have to be culled, so maybe they are extra high with their standards of the crested birds and only the super feisty and strong ones make it? Your idea about deafness is interesting. Mine has quieted down compared to before so I'm not sure mine has that issue.

Interesting..I need to know myself. I have a crested khaki hen Lily. She's a goof ball, the good one and the quiet one. Loo her sister which is not a crested hen is my bad noisy duck. She screams "WAH WAH WAH" she is awful!!! And She's going to get me in trouble if I can't figure out what the deal is. No real reason, no patterns. The only thing I can think of is she is my clingy anxiety duck. She knows it bothers me and she does it more, when it upsets me. I run out to see if shes ok. Shes smart she knows if she screams I come running..lol If I try to ignore her she stops or shortens her screaming time. Ugh! Help! Lol I told her the story of how the little duck cries wolf.. I have really bad neighbors and I can't have them complain. And I don't want Loo to get hurt by them or get me in trouble. Her screaming is ridiculous. Separation would not help. A duck muzzle maybe lol

@Magnolia Ducks Let me guess: One of the Magpies? - Yeah mine are extreme loud too!
But nothing in comparison to the White Layer Tank Ducks. They are truly deafening and cheeky and always first for the duck-crack. All of my Maggies have the same sharp loud quack and chatter permanently, regardless of having a crest or none. I have two with a crest and three without, they are always the last ones to fall asleep and always the first ones to wake up. Seems to be a Magpie-thing.
I hope they become calmer with age!
Or i become deafer with age…

Not a magpies but one of my Buffs. The magpies seem regular loud to me. This duck has a creast on top and one at her ear hole as well. That's why I wondered about her hearing. She drowns out the gander even. My house is about 100 meters from their coop but I can hear her.

Now y’all hame worried about my plan to Order and pick up from Ideal next year. How many crested did you wind up with @WannaBeHillBilly ?
I just got the one and this is my second round with Ideal. Never had one before. I would still use them because
1) they are driving distance, even closer to you
2) the ducks are nice. Although they don't have golden 300s which I miss having
3) They have Magpies!
4) Their ducks are smaller and grow slower. Produce smaller eggs but no leg problems.

What @WannaBeHillBilly said about the White Tanks is fun because it mirrors my experience. I miss my white tanks but I couldn't tell them apart so I named them the triplets.
