One of my Black Astralorps was spunky, eating and drinking, etc. I collected the last few eggs at 4 last evening. When I went to shut the coop up at 8 she was staring at the wall a bit puffed out and looking dazed. She could walk but very slowly and with her legs aligned. All she would do is stand a little hunched and stare.

I brought her in and didn't know if it was egg binding as I've never seen this before. We put her in a pan of lukewarm water for a half hour. She just stood there. I wrapped her in a towel and sat with her while she slept. We put her in her own cage in the house. This morning she was worse, not eating or drinking, the color had left the area above her vent (where the others had picked her) and it had turned white (last night it was as red as it usually is.) Somehow blood shunted from the area.

She became progressively more lethargic, had one poop that was like pudding with white, a little yellow and black. I called the chicken vet and was getting her ready to travel when she had a seizure and died. It was awful. She just looked at my son and pooped herself and died.

I took her to the vet who said she had no idea what happened ($55). Then told me it could be shock, cardiac arrest, low blood sugar but she didn't think she was egg bound. I asked her about avian flu and she said I would have to bring in a healthy chicken that would be killed to take a blood sample. ***!? She offered to send her for a necroscopy ($480). I had her cremated there ($76 + the visit). I mention the money because I drove over an hour to this new vet who handles poultry hoping to do something besides pay $130 on a limited income.

I'm afraid for my girls and it was a wasted trip. What would cause a chicken that seemed so healthy to sicken and die like that in less than 12 hours?

Anyone have any ideas? I'm freaking. Thanks.

It's going to happen. That's part of raising birds. I wouldn't worry too much about it unless other birds start dying off.
