1) What type of bird , age and weight (does the chicken seem or feel lighter or thinner than the others.) Americana (Tractor Supply variety) 5 yrs old Norm weight
2) What is the behavior, exactly. Was attacked by a raptor of some huge kind (heard flapping, scraping on roof, our dog somehow managed to get it to leave the chicken and chased it off as we ran outside) which left a scary gash on her side and a slash in her vent. Like an episiotomy on the top of her vent for those who know what that is.
3) How long has the bird been exhibiting symptoms? 3 days
4) Are other birds exhibiting the same symptoms? no
5) Is there any bleeding, injury, broken bones or other sign of trauma. Bleeding stopped pretty quickly, thankfully. The bird ripped her entire back half of feathers off but didn't get a good hold of her
6) What happened, if anything that you know of, that may have caused the situation. (
7) What has the bird been eating and drinking, if at all. regular feed plus we've been giving her veggies and treats like that and yogurt to compensate for mox. Plus electrolytes
8) How does the poop look? Normal? Bloody? Runny? etc. normal but runs down her behind
9) What has been the treatment you have administered so far? amoxicillin, neosporin, vetericyn, vaseline to try to keep poop off her skin
10 ) What is your intent as far as treatment? For example, do you want to treat completely yourself, or do you need help in stabilizing the bird til you can get to a vet? No chicken vets around me - both wounds are healing well, pink and healthy looking but the vent wound is always wet and has poop on it with every new poop. I tried a kind of diaper to go under the vent to redirect the poo, but nothing is working. No matter how many times I bathe her, there is always poop in the wound and under it. Worst place to have a would in the world. I am afraid it'll get infected bc of all the poop. Any ideas, reassurance, etc would be welcome.
11) If you have a picture of the wound or condition, please post it. It may help. Image at end. It's sideways for some reason.. Wet look is vaseline, black stuff is pine tar. I'm really throwing spaghetti against the wall here. I put an arrow pointing at the wound in her vent.
12) Describe the housing/bedding in use I have her in a large cat crate with a towel and a layer of newspaper I change about 500 million times a day. In my kitchen.

Did I do something wrong with this post, or is it not an emergency enough to be in this forum?

Bumping this up. You didn't do anything wrong, it's just that as new items get posted, they cause others to disappear and get scrolled away. I'm sorry, it's been nearly a month since your poor hen was injured. My guess is that if you kept doing what you said you were doing she's probably just about healed by now. You really did do everything right! Keeping her clean, keeping her in where flies could not get to her and keeping the wound moist, you did great! How is she now?

I have the exact same issue!! Do you have any updates? My chicken has a gash from a hawk attack just below her vent/butt hole, and her poop runs down and gets stuck all around the stitches. I'm worried about infection and how to clean/remove the poop without damaging the stitches! What's worse is that her poop has entirely been runny instead of clumps so it inevitably gets in there! I hope your chicken healed ok and is healthy again! <3

She healed up really nice. I put pine tar on it every day and bathed her behind every day until it scabbed up. She actually laid a couple eggs during her convalescence, lol! It was gross for quite a while but thankfully healed up well. I hope your chicken heals up well too!!

Sorry, I missed this reply - she's 100% healed up and is enjoying her happy chicken life, lol :) Thanks for responding!
