"Rare Exotic Bird"

So, my mom and I split an order from McMurray. She ordered 15 BO's. i got two of them and the Mystery Chick. This is the Mystery Chick included with the order. We originally thought it was. RIR, but I don't think it is now. I am also thinking our Harriet is a Harry. This chick is much larger and heavier than my BOs. What do you think we have? The chicks are 5 weeks old.

Looks like my buckeyes. Not sure on sex but I've heard hatcheries will generally add males as "packing peanuts" as one person stated lol.

No clue what it is, but I'd agree most likely a male. Not because MMM always sends males as the free chick--I've had pullets sent a couple of times--but it does look male.

As to breed... dunno. Not a RIR. It will most likely be one of these (look at the breeds listed in the assortments as well): http://www.mcmurrayhatchery.com/rare_and_unusual_breeds.html?cl=crumbtrail

I don't think MMM sells Buckeyes.

i think it is an red sex link maybe or a new Hampshire im not to sure what it is but these are my guesses ... it could be a cockerel but at this age it would show more waddle so maybe pullet

Red sex link or RIR. When she fills out shell most likely lose the black dots, but not always.
I'd say female, large comb but yellow. If it becomes pink or red then it's a boy, but for now girl

But red sex links, new hamps, etc aren't listed under the rare/exotic breed they send. It should be something else......

that bird does not really look rare or exotic to me because I had hens / chicks that looked like that and they were not rare or exotic but hatcheries lie

It's a production red. Not a RIR, and not exotic.

They must have messed up. It does look like a girl though right now.

Sooooooo, the general consensus is that is is probably a roo, but definitely a hen. Definitely NOT a RIR, but probably a red sex, New Hamp, or a RIR? ;-)

LOL. Guess I will just wait and see!
