I love Orpington’s and I’m curious on what rare pure Orpington’s y’all have right now I’m breeding buff dipped Orpington’s as I call them (this is red my rooster hes not poofy because it was raining) I breed them by crossing lavender Orpington’s with buff Orpington’s to get a black Orpington with a buff dipped head. I know of chocolate silver laced, lavender cuckoos, jubilee’s, blue molted, and all the basic buffs, lavenders, chocolate, etc. but any cool two Orpington color crosses that are pure Orpington just different colors or any rare breeds that you have.

I was breeding for SOP body shape/tail angle/face etc...
Only outside genetics used was barring from Barred Rocks. But that was at the very beginning.

Hi RiDaGeckoGuy, sounds like we’re in the same boat. I’m new to Orpington’s but have fallen in love. I currently have Lavender, Buff, Gold Laced, Blue, White and Black. All are young so won’t be breeding until next year, but can’t wait to play around with colours and see what happens! Do you just have the Buff and Lavender?

Hi Mystery Chicken

Orpingtons are my favourite in terms of temperament. I have 2 blue - barred cockerals from a splash orpington rooster over a barred rock hen. I'd love to breed chicks with some interesting colours and patterns as you have done as I mostly have black orpingtons. For hen options in this project I have hens as follows: blue, white or black orpingtons, or partridge leghorn. Have you any suggestions on what combination would produce what. It seems the male barred rock offspring take patterns from their mother. While the female offspring may carry the barred gene, I'm not sure what male colour genetics would allow the barring to be expressed.
Any comments would be appreciated. Thank you.

I'll answer your question as soon as I can.

With barring, it doesn't matter. Could use a sexlinked male like I did(Buff Orpington Rooster X Barred Rock Hen), or use a purebred Cuckoo/Barred Orpington instead of using a cross.

Any black, or white chicken can hide other traits.

Thank you very much.good to know not to use black or white. I have 3 splash x plymounth rock cockerals showing grey barring. The 2 females just look blue.

I'll put that information to use next southern hemisphere spring
