Apparently snakes are quite effective wiping out the rats and mice, then they eat your eggs and chicks.

Have you tried live traps?

Live traps seem to work best as does the electric trap. Make sure that you tie the bate to the trap so that they can't just grab and run. My DH used a puppy biscuit..tied it to the trap with dental floss...smeared it with peanut butter and stuck sunflower seeds to it...first night, success
