Rarely is it ever "she, he or it". Rather almost always "them". As in a colony.

They came for a reason and it is almost certainly the free chicken feed.

I just ordered a large Grandpas feeder for our 22 hens and 1 rooster flock, how is it working so far? We're trying to get rid of rats here too in Florida Rooster Hens and Organic Gardening
