This is our first year with chickens, who are now 11 weeks old, but not new to living in the country in the desert area. We have rattle snakes. last year killed 8 of them before my kids got bit ( we do rattle snake searches before they go out to play and they are hopefully very aware of where they step)

Anyway - rattlesnakes. Haven't seen on yet this year but I know it's only a matter of time.

What if there is one in the coop or run? Will it bite our chickens??

My guess would be yes. I would be careful. Isn't there such a thing as snake fence that they can't get through? I saw it onetime years ago at an Agriculture Expo in GA. Maybe you could get some of that to go around your chicken yard.

We've got them bad here, too. Not much you can do......

We have rattlesnakes too. My husband got this one the other day on our back porch. It measured 4 foot without a head!

We've lost a few chickens in the last few weeks. Everyone of them was killed during the day in their coop. We would come home and they would be having seizures, then die. We think it was a diamond back or bull snake. Since we've put really small wire around the bottom of our pen & haven't lost one since. So here's hoping!

I think I would passout. I killed 3 black snakes in my hen house sunday and it freaked me out and they aren't even venomous..

For the last 3 summers I have a rat snake in by barn. I lose a few eggs to it, but have very little problems with rats. It is about 51/2 to 6' long.

I've never caught a rattlesnake eating a chicken but If a rattlesnake can swallow it and it has a heartbeat it will try to eat it. They killed one about an hour south of here at a chicken house. I saw a picture and it was enormous. They claimed it had four leghorns in it's belly. I don't doubt it because I've killed 6 footers with rabbits in them and that snake looked a couple foot longer. I'm not sure if they still have it but Kens fish hatchery in Alapaha GA carried the snake fence a couple years ago.
