Hello everyone! I'm happy to join the forum, seeing as I finally have chickens. Mom and I have been talking about it for years and years now, and with my step-dad passed on and my younger sister graduated, I've moved onto the farm to help out. So, chickens!
I just picked up 20 day-old Black Australorps (10 pullets and 10 straight run), adorable sweet tiny balls of fluff, but I have some 3-week Production Red pullets that I bought on impulse while we were getting supplies for the others, and this past weekend an acquaintance of mine gave me her gorgeous white Leghorn rooster, since they're not really equipped for him. So, from famine to feast! ... so-to-speak.
Not that we haven't had some concerns! One of the babies who came in today has a dislocated knee or foot (not sure where the problem is exactly), and I don't know if there's anything I can do for it. I tried to gently but firmly tug the joint apart so it'd go back into place, but I'm not sure how much success I had. I don't know if it'll survive--I can't separate it right now.
Along with that, our LGD (great pyrenees) who takes care of our alpacas, decided that the rooster was a fun thing to chase, and he bit his tail off. So that'll take some work on our part to correct the behavior and protect the bird. Thank god it was just some feathers, but even though he's pretty tame, and likes to follow me around the yard, he'll nip sometimes when I go to handle him. I don't know if that's because of the stress of the new environment (especially the dog thing) or something else.
Anyway, I hope to get to know you fine folks here. I've been reading threads on the forum for a couple weeks now when questions arise, and it's time to say hello.
If anyone has any advice for me, please let me know. Otherwise, nice to meet you!
