Well, after a whole host of issues and generalised ups and downs of life I have just restocked my chicken yard!

They are all being kept in the coop for the first couple of days (other than supervised visits to the garden) so hopefully they will all know where to go when they are let out to free range.

However, these are much smaller than any chickens I've had before, so I'm kinda thinking I might make them an enclosed run for when we're not around, a cat got one of my standards last year and these would be little more than a mouthful!

I have got a black and a lavender (though it looks white to me) peking (I think you call them something else in the states) a gold seabright and a black Japanese bantam.

All except for the seabright are very hand tame which will be good for my nephew.

I'm so happy to have chickens back

Kitsune, that's our policy here for free ranging. If we are home, the hens are out after noon. Othewise they have freedom in the chicken yard that is fenced in.

Well these chickens obviously are not used to ranging... I started going out and opening the coop when we are around, an hour later I'd go back outside and there they would still be, inside the coop peering out of the door!

They will go outside if I shoo them through the door but then only the pekings will go back in again, the jap and the seabright have to be herded..

hummm...

Any suggestions on how to up their confidence or is this just a waiting game?

Sorry for the thread jack...

Kitsune, my mum was from Manchester (she was a war bride)and we still have cousins in Rochdale. I really liked visiting there when I was a child...especially the fish and chips.
