Re-homing a rooster

Craigslist is the go-to around here. Be prepared for either a quick rehome or weeks and weeks of nothing - and if you feel strongly he not end up as dinner, you'll have to do some screening. Good close-in pictures and a fun name are a big help -- as are the subject lines - something that stands out.

Standard questions I ask when I reply to an inquiry are things like how many hens do you have, send me a picture of your coop and run, how long have you been keeping chickens. The ones that don't answer back are the ones likely looking for him to be a meal. Anyone can lie about what their intentions are but that seems to be a good way to sift through a rehome. I've had people reply honestly that they intend to use the rooster for food and to keep their info should there ever be one that isn't safe to rehome.

You can check out your local Facebook backyard chicken groups. I see a lot of roosters being re-homed on those.

I’m sorry but I don’t mind if he is dinner . I don’t want to offend but he is a food source so I can except that. I couldn’t eat him .

Best thing to have is low expectations, everyone has extra roosters so it's a real crap shoot that someone will want him.
In the past 7 years I've slaughtered a couple dozen extra cockerels and older hens,
because only a few have been sold or taken.
