I have 5 hens. Two weeks ago one of then was attacked by a coyote. My dogs saved her and beat the crap out of the coyote. The first week I had Sophie in the house in a 30 X 48 kennel in my spare bedroom while I tended her wound. This week I've been putting her in another kennel outside right next to the run so she can hang with the flock and they can see, smell, and touch each other if Sophie chooses to be close enough, but they can't get near her wound (it's actually well hidden under her wing, but her whole right side is bald from just behind her wing to her vent). She's out there from 8am to around 5pm, at which time I bring her back inside and turn the other 4 loose to free range til they put themselves in the coop at night. She's almost healed well enough, but I think I'll give it another week so I'm not too worried about the wound having problems. I'll put blu kote on it when I turn her out with the flock. What's the best way to do the re-introduction? Do you think being in the kennel next to them will help with this? I was thinking of turning them all out around 5-ish together to range rather than putting her in the coop right away. That way she can get away if it's an issue. Ideas? Things that have worked for you?
