I was just thinking about what one could do to have better success with the postal service and hatching eggs and it would seem that the box is the culpert ! I will assume that the weight of the box is the factor that they use to figuire out the cost ? or is it the size of the box , I have yet to ship eggs ?? I hear so much about the box's being damaged that maybe a "" better box "" is required !There are some real tough materials out there ( light weight )that with a bit of thought one should be able to make a box that could take some abuse and stand up to it , even cover it with cardboard and play with there minds

.Myself I think if the cost is not to great then I would prefer a box that would stand up to all the abuse just to make sure that the eggs make it to me safe ............any thoughts ?? has anyone done this and if so what are the pro's and con's ??

Sorry , would it make a differance if the box was sturdier then a paper box , in respect to damaged box's and damaged eggs ? Would it be worth paying a bit more for shipping knowing that the box wouldn't be damaged , with the contents ?

I think the box is fine but the innards are important.. I just shipped eggs (3) in floral foam... I will let you know how it turned out... If I hear back... I just carved out 3 egg spots and put two blocks of floral foam together with dowels and wrapped them up and put them in a shipping box with popcorn... My thinking is that the outside floral foam will get crushed before the eggs and that if an egg were to crack the foam will absorb the moisture...anyone else think of this one?

i dont think the box has anything to do with poor hatch rates in shipped eggs. I think its all in how the postmen decide to handle said box. Even if the eggs are secure inside the box, if someone decides to shake it too hard the inside of the egg (in the shell) is going to get all scrambled up.

You're right , the box has nothing to do with the hatch rate , but ! the box plays a huge part in how the eggs arrive at you end .All I was saying is that maybe a box sturdier the paper might save the bashed box from coming to your postal address .I have recieved eggs in foam like what ChooksChick was refering to and it is a whole lot better then some of the wrapping jobs That I have seen , the eggs are a LOT safer in that kind of case , and it would take a lot to get the eggs damaged .
