I've got 2 "Golden Comet" (sex link) pullets, 1 Buff Orpington pullet and 1 Barred Rock pullet who are 21 weeks old., About 3 weeks ago I noticed that the BO was getting much reader in the face and ears, and then one of the comets started to get redder. Now both comets are redder in the face, but strangely the BO's face color keeps changing. Sometimes she is very rosy, and sometimes very pale. It's not related to the time or the temperature, but her redness definitely waxes and wanes. Is this normal? None of them has squatted, and none of checked out the nest boxes (at least that I have noticed). We put a plastic easter egg in each nest box when we saw them starting to get red. I've tried feeling the width of their pelvic bones, but I can't be sure I am really feeling the right bones - so I don't know.
On average, from what I've read it seems the Comets should start laying first, then the BO, then the Rock. I know that similar questions have been asked and answered thousands of times, so I'll try to ask something a bit more unique: Is it normal for the face color to change as I have seen in our BO? And what are the chances that (gulp) they any of them may not lay until next spring? It certainly has not been too cold - could being too hot cause a delay as well?
Thanks for your advice!!!
