I am not sure where to post this. We are in the middle of a heat wave and I am worried about my girls. They are free range so they have been hanging out under the trees but they are already so hot and its only 11 AM They are panting and spreading their wings out. I have a few waterers out with ice and I put out a shallow pan of water, that they don't go near! Are they going to be ok? Is there anything else we can do? I have only had chickens for a few months and I am really worried!!!

Heat is extremely dangerous and can kill. Keep pails of COOL(NOT COLD)water around yard,in the event of heat stroke/stress submerge chicken up to their neck in pail of water, this will immediately drop their body temp and cool them down. Hose down area during day,use misters to keep everything cool, sml pool with enough water to get feet wet. Give frozen watermelon/other fruit.

Its so hot where I live I had to bring my flock inside because I didn't want them dieing! Its 112 degrees where I live and I didn't want to loose my birds.if you notice the heat is just too much for them and they can't cool off you might consider making an area inside for them until the heat wave passes. This is what I'm doing. At first I was wetting them all with water and giving mellon but nothing seemed to help so I just brought them inside. You might consider this if the heat is just too much. We were at 112 degrees and that's just too hot! I felt taking them inside was my only other choice! I hope this helps and if your birds are getting ill from the heat you might also consider this temporary arrangement. Best of luck!
