I have a Rhode island white that just went broody. The interesting thing is tat she just started laying. She laid only a weeks worth of eggs before deciding to be a mom. I am not sure how many eggs are under her but I think she has 7. I plan to move her to our "aviarary coop" tomorrow so she can finis out her business.

Does that happen often? A chicken with only around 7 eggs under her belt deciding to go broody? Quite neat I suppose.

This just happened to my JG. She is a great mama though. And has some gorgeous, cuddly, healthy chicks. I was really surprised though, she actually took eggs from the coop and rolled them under our porch to be broody. (It took me a whole week to realize she was down there!) My younger hens actually seem to be the better mamas though.

Best of Luck~Ms.B. :)

It's happened to me twice. Hen starts laying and within 2 weeks she's broody!

Thanks for the replies. Good to hear I don't have the only crazy chickens! Hopefully she will be a good mommie

My young hens were both great moms. One weaned her chicks and promptly went broody on her next clutch of eggs and the other one went on laying after weaning her chicks and hasn't shown any signs of going broody again.
