My husband and I share a PC. I have a laptop but it is dead, a $1000 paper weight. The fan has gone on it and I have been told by the PC repair man that it would be better to replace it than fix it since the laptop I have is known for problems. My husband agrees. So I am looking for a simple PC for internet use, picture and media storage and something the kids can do homework on. I also don't want to break the bank. I am looking to get something $500 or less. Any ideas as to a name brand or models? And I think I am done with lap tops and don't want a netbook.

It depends on what you want. Unless you are doing extreme gaming or high graphics, you could get a really nice computer around $500. I know Walmart usually has an HP in stock, but you might want to go check out a store that has a selection of them to check out. We have a Systemax Desktop and a Lenovo Laptop from Tigerdirect.com, the rest are frankensteins.

Yeah, sorry I missed that, they say if you like XP, you'll love Windows 7. I've grown accustomed to Vista... has things I wish XP had.

I am in a graduate program for database management and I asked fellow students. I have heard only rave reviews, and I upgraded my laptop from Vista to 7. It is different than XP, but more than functional. Good luck!

I'm actually glad to hear you like Vista! I was under the impression it was replaced by 7 because no one liked it, but I have never heard that from an actual user

I have Vista I hated it at first, but now I like it quite well. Ya know....if that helps

I also LOVE HP's!!! They are the best IMO.

I work in IT for a school and we have used both HP and Dell. I like them both. I have a Dell at home. If you order from Dell, by phone, you can usually have the PC downgraded to XP. They might charge you a little bit to do it, but it might be worth it for you. HP might do the same if you call them and not buy through a store. They will do it for our schools.

I have used Windows 7 briefly. It seems ok, so far. I know it is coming and I have to stay ahead of my students so I am upgrading my desktop system at home soon.

Good luck.

My newest lap top is an Acer from Walmart. I bought my son a Gateway for college 6 years ago, he still uses it daily. Acer bought Gateway awhile back. I use Vista, no complaints.
