So my sweetheart of a bird suddenly stopped using on leg. This was two days ago. I separated her and allowed her rest as well as made a vet appointment for today. Unfortunately she passed through the night. I have no idea what claimed her but I am guessing the leg issue was a symptom and not the problem. Now I am torn on what to do next. This bird was my sons. He is 4. She was the most friendly and just an all around great bird. I have two more hens and a rooster. I was lucky to never have had fighting in the flock. Now my son wants to get another like his Dee Dee. Is that possible without upsetting the others? Advice would be appreciated.

Your dealing with chickens, their hard to please.Unfourtently your gonna most likely deal with some fighting/bullying when introducing a new bird, your best bet,if you wanna avoid fighting FOR THE MOST PART, is to get maybe three baby chicks, and if you can’t do that get maybe two adult hens and keep them through a see through pen for a good week or two. That away they can get to know each other through wire without seriously injuring one another if that’s what your concerned about.Don't forget to quarantine any new birds before putting them with the rest to avoid getting any other sick,I would also see what caused the bird to die by maybe getting a autopsy, that away you can know if it’s contagious and what you knew to do to help the rest avoid it.

I was just looking into locations to send her. I truly am baffled by her sudden death she was a young newly laying hen who by all standards appeared healthy right up until the afternoon a day and a half before she died. I appreciate you taking the time to respond.
