Alot of breeds make pretty good layers.

Rhode Island Red
Barred Rocks
Orpingtons
Leghorns

And of course many others.

Some of my best layers were actually Old English Game hens. They come in a HUGE variety of colors, rarely go broody and are excellent foragers. They do tend to talk alot though, and they aren't the friendliest things, but I still enjoyed them. They had alot of personality and tamed enough to be comfortable with me walking near them and to take food from my hand.

My silkies are great layers too, but they tend to go broody quite often which is something you said you didn't want.

I had a cornish hen once as a layer too. She was a rescue and we initially thought she was an adult leghorn, but she ended up being a young, 2 month old cornish hen. Full grown she weighed in at 12 pounds. She regularly layed double yolked eggs. The only bad thing was she ate ALOT.
