I have had a 4 gallon waterer for 4 years. it is of the "locking base" variety similar to this but larger.

The trouble is, after many refills with well water, the calcium deposits on the base make it more difficult to twist off. This winter, when twisting it off, it cracked. I sealed it with waterproof adhesive and it lasted through the winter but now is leaking again. I love it b/c it holds 4 gallons and they can't poop in it (it hangs from a rope) but it is a pain to untwist the base everytime it needs filling. Does anyone have a favorite waterer that is poop-proof, at least 4 gallons ( we have 8 hens and a Rooster)?

If you are mildly handy, then get a 5-gallon bucket, lid and horizontal nipples. All you need is a drill and plumbers tape (to help seal around the nipples).

FYI- Calcium deposits can be cleaned out safely using vinegar. I buy it by the gallon.

Thanks, When we first got the chickens, I bought nipples and cups and drilled out a 5 gallon bucket. I must have gotten poor quality b/c the cups leaked despite the gaskets and the chickens couldn't get the hang of the nipples- they just played with the shiny part and watched the water drip to the ground. I ended up ruining a 5 gallon bucket.
I may try the cups again-I still have unopened packs of them and the bucket should still be around...Maybe I'll use silicone around the holes in the bucket to see if that stops the leaks.

I don't really recommend cups. They freeze more easily in winter. I do recommend horizontal nipples as they won't freeze (assuming you are using a water heater).
