just a slang word. gals, chicks, ladies, babes lolMaybe research ‘chicks vs pullets’. Do you want to raise cute little chicks or buy older ‘easier’ pullets.

That term usage is confusing to me because I think of pullets as any young female chicken including female chicks. Couldn’t she get pullets that are chicks or older pullets under a year old???
I was thinking more along the lines of this...

You are the ROCKSTAR of information!! GREAT information for a newbie like me. Laid it all out.Welcome! Barred Rocks are a great place to start your chicken addiction. They lay well. They are abundant. They are servicable meat birds when delicious cornish crosses aren’t available.. Honestly they are right there with Rhode Island Reds, and Buff Orpingtons, and Wyandottes for all around great chickens. They are fairly friendly. They lay through the winter for us.
I would start out with feed store chicks. Most hatcheries make it considerably more expensive to order less than 20-25 chicks. That would be an excessive amount if a single breed for me. Unless you are very rare you will very soon want more than one breed! So it is a good idea to leave room to expand in case you get to the feed store and go “Holy crap I saw pictures of those, give me three of them! Oh! Honey they have the Silver Laced Wyandottes! Yes, five of those please!”you get the idea!
Oh and someone may have said this but get pullets(female chicks) unless you are prepared to cull your roosters. Straight run chicks will be roughly half roosters. You don’t need any roosters unless you want so raise some chicks someday. In that case you need only one rooster for every 15-18 hens/pullets. So unless you want to rehome(not easy), or butcher excess roosters, you want all pullet/female chicks.
I hope that helps.
I’m glad to help. Enjoy your chicken adventure. You are the ROCKSTAR of information!! GREAT information for a newbie like me. Laid it all out.
