Flock of 12 commercial brown leghorns all born on same day (May 2010) and been together from day one. No roosters. Never a single skirmish or fight that I can remember.
One gal became sick a few days ago, and stood in a far corner all by herself all day. Looked kind of puffed up top of her legs and I didn't quite know what to make of it. Vent was okay, didn't feel egg-bound. I figured it may be ascites and assumed she would die in a day or two.
Turns out she now looks much better, foraging and pecking around, but now she is being viciously attacked by at least 2 others. She's tensely on the alert all the time, untill suddenly she's off with one of the attackers at her heels. When her comb and face became bloodied, I separated her from the rest for 2 days, returning her to the coop at night only.
The attacks continue. I'm thinking:
a) maybe she hasn't quite recovered, but worse;
b) maybe she has lost her place in the pecking order?
Am I making matters worse by keeping her separated?
