Is the Red and Black Sex Link the same as the Red Star and the Black Star or is it a totally different bird?

I have received 6 BSL's and hope that they are everything I have heard regarding egg production...one of the very best! Hope you get some!!

I live in the city and was thinking about getting 4 Red Star's or either 2 Red Star's and 2 RIR's. I would like to get a good egg layer that is calm, quite and good with kids. Any other ideas I would sure like to hear them, as I am new to all of this.

I would suggest you take a look at Barred Rocks also. Great layers and great temperment (even my BR rooster). I take my 2 year old daughter in the run with me to throw scratch all the time, and there's never been an issue (at least not since I did away with my first rooster, who was not a BR). The BR's are the most docile of mine and the easiest to get hands on to pick up. I also have 2 RIR's, and I love them. They are great layers too. My BR's are calmer though.

So is Gold Comet another name for a Red Star? I know there are different permutations that result in sex links, maybe it is a specific breed combination that is called Gold Comet. I don't know. I do know they can make eggs every day of the year if you want to light them. I know some people feel emotionally about the artificial lighting to extend egg production, though.

Tadkerson gives a great explanation of how sex links are made if you are really interested. Here's the link.

Red Sex Links or Black Sex Links can me made from many different breeds. To simplify it a bunch, for a BSL you need a red rooster (like a RIR, New Hampshire Red, Speckled Sussex, or many more) and a barred hen (like a Barred Rock, Silver Laced Wyandotte,or Dominique). For a Red sex link you need a red rooster and a white hen with certain restrictions gene-wise (like a White Rock or Delaware).

There is no sex link police running around handing out fines or giving jail time to people who mis-label their sex links. There are certain names that most people understand generally mean a specific cross, but there is no guarantee. For example, a Cinnamon Queen is generally understood to be a RIR rooster over a Silver Laced Wyandotte hen, but some people use a New Hampshire Red instead. I believe a Golden Comet is normally a RIR over a White Rock. A lot of people call their sex links Black Star or Red Star. The Stars could be the same parentage as the Golden Comet or Cinnamon Queen or may be different.

So a Golden Comet and a Red Star could have the same parentage but not necessarily. It just depends on what the specific hatchery chooses to call their sex link chickens.

Hope that makes some sense. I think I made it sound more complicated than it is even after saying I'd keep it simple.

I have a gold comet and she is a laying machine. I get a large to ex large egg from her every day. It is a a little odd shaped, almost round. It barely fits in an egg carton. I hope top get two more in April. She is friendly but not as friendly as some of the others in my flock. Interesting because when she was a young chick she was by far the friendliest.

Blake101 - I currently have one RIR pullet. She is definitely by friendliest bird. And she is a good layer. Probably 5 - 6 eggs per week. I like her so well that I will be getting 3 - 5 more in April. I have three on order but a couple more could find their way into the brooder.

My BSL and my Cinnamon Queen along with my Barred Rock are my laying machines. My Speckled Sussex also lays a goodly number.
