Two of my 6 week old orps have some redness and slight swelling around their eyes. They are blacks and have a white area above the eyes like eye shadow, and this is where I noticed the redness. They are very slightly swollen where the redness is, too. Poop looks normal, they are acting completely normal. No sneezing/coughing or discharge. Eating like little horses and drinking well. They just seem like Cornish Hen sized youngsters that are into everything, the little monsters (my babies!).

I just gave everyone, them and the older ones too, a round of Wacine yesterday when I noticed it since it reminded me that I'd never wormed them and they are able to free range for about an hour every day where there's wild birds and God knows what else around that they can catch something from. also misted their faces with some diluted Oxine (without the activator - I never use that) in case there's a fungus among us or something. This wasn't a popular move LOL.

I looked on here and the 'net at large and of course came up with all sorts of seriously scary things

, but all had some sort of other symptom attached that they just don't have. Except, perhaps, roundworms in one case.

Anyone have a good guess as to what is causing this?

if you have some neosporin or terrimycin eye ointment you might put some around and even a small amount in the eye. If you use neo. be sure it doesn't have pain relief in it. sounds like an irritant of some sort. might even try some saline wash to make sure they haven't gotten some dust from the shaving if thats what your using.

Thank you, Miss Lydia. I think you're right. I changed the bedding with fresh shavings and after that plus the spray it was gone the next day. But the day after that it's back. There must be something in those shavings that is irritating to them. Trying straw next. Thought about using dry leaves since I have so many around here but I think they'll scratch in those so much that they'll end up sleeping on the bare floor if I do that. They LOVE to scratch in leaves.
