Any guesses on cause or suggested treatment?

It could be mites, but I'd guess feather picking by other chickens.

The two most popular causes of feather picking is overcrowding or they are lacking protein.

Probably the best thing to put on it, though, would be Vetericyn spray, as that prevents infection and promotes healing.

You'll have to determine if this is a chicken or chicken(s) causing this, who it is and isolate them or her from them.
 
It's due to urates scalding her rear end causing loss of feathers and fluff, redness and irritation.
Apply Nu-Stock on the area until healed. Shake the tube well and wear disposable gloves when applying it. It will also prevent any picking.
