Our red golden hen has laid 2 egg in a nest that we have made in the pen. she laid one about a week ago and another one yesterday and the pair seem to cover them at night and uncover them during the warmth of the day, however i haven't seen her sit on them at all and wonder how many eggs she will lay and how long can the stay in the nest without her on them before they go bad to where we can purchase a incubator to do it that way? Thanks

if you continue to collect the eggs, you may get anywhere up to 25+ eggs in a season. As a general rule if you collect eggs, I go no more than 7 days before incubation. the longer you wait the greater chance of infertility. If she sets, she will maybe lay 6-12 eggs. banty hens make the absolute best incubators, but you can pick up a cheapo incubator at tractor supply.

Your hen won't begin to incubate her eggs until she has completed her clutch of eggs, usually around 8 or 10. If your outside temp where the eggs are is hot too hot and in the shade they will be good for a week or ten days. If after 7 or 8 days and she don't show any signs of sitting I would put them in an incubator. Like JMiller said Banty hens are great hatchers but not too careful with tiny pheasant chicks, much more reliable than a chepo incubator .But best to pull the chicks from the little hen after they hatch.
