Hi Everyone
I'm new here and would like to ask a question. I have a male 3 1/2 month old red golden pheasant who broke his wing somehow. I have tried 3 different times to bandage it up to keep it immoble with no success. He is a little houdini and keeps getting out of the bandages. I used compressions stockings, athletic tape and medical tape with no success. Even wrapped around his good wing thinking it would keep the bandage in place with no luck. Well, I can't move his wing back into place anymore so his primary flight feathers on that wing drag a little. Will he be ok like this? I have kept him isolated from the other birds since it happened. Will he be accepted by the other pheasants like this? He will go into an aviary with 3 other red goldens (2 males and 1 felmale) and 11 peafowl.
What should I do? Thank you for any advice you can give.

Does he beat his wings to get out of the bandages? Isolation and immobilization are essential to the healing process, but yeah, from experience it is hard to keep those wings from beating frantically when bound. If it is a mid wing break you should try putting him in a sling and fasten straps across the back to keep him from flapping, I used an old papasan base and tied a wide strip of cloth over both wings.

If the break is all healed up and its just the dragging feathers that bother you, you can just clip the dragging feathers to give him less chance of dirt/infection from more flapping and re-breakage. He may be off balance for a bit, but should be able to adept. Just try to keep the dragging feathers shorter.

Definately don't let them all back together until he is fully healed since they may pick on him if they sense weakness or injury but do try to keep him near them so they can still see and hear each other. Its like cats, slow reintroductions after a lengthy absence.

Good luck. Speedy recovery
