My Coop
So last week 20 something DS was “in charge” while I was away. I get a call asking how many hens to we have in the main flock.... unrelated dialogue.... I got home after 11:30PM due to major accident in Dallas. Did not go out to check on chickens.

The next afternoon I heard a wierd hen noise coming through the open window of the coop and I’m inside it. I go out to discover a hen hiding under some cover. Alive but, very wounded. I sent a quick PM to a couple friend here .... got her stable in a “crate” for hospital mode. A couple days go by she is eating some, drinking some, get up and walks a little, laying in pipe shaving or the dirt for long periods. Pooping occasionally & very liquidy.

then discovered she had a really nasty poop covered butt, on the 3rd day of recovery also learned what happened to cause the wounds and feathers lost across her saddle. She had flown over the 5’ fence and one of our dogs thought she was a toy. Story from neighbors.

while trimming feathers away from vent I discovered she was covered in mites!
/shudders (suffice it to say I have extreme reaction to such small bugs, so I searched here on solutions) found a thread with the user sharing their own YouTube video. Great stuff. Then I watched, maybe another half dozen of so similar videos. 1 1/2 days later I can finally wash her outside. The rain had stopped.
Brought her in did the blow dryer on low. She seemed to really enjoy it. Took easily over 30 minutes - the hard part was under her wings because of the puncture wounds above and behind the wings this would be from an anatomical stand point something she would feel pain from if lifted or opened to far or to quickly. As it is, one did start to quiver after a period of time so I got into a pattern of dry here and there allowing the wings muscles to relax and that seemed to solve the quivering issue.

she’s been inside and no mites visible on her that I have seen - still.
So here we are today, Sunday, and we now have 2 full days of her pooping with a very liquidy green lumps and some white material.

for the last 3-4 days she has been getting a couple tbsp of yogurt at least once a day along with ground up soft meat, tiny pieces of kale & other greens she can easily pick up and swallow. She also has access to a bowl of crumbles, and mushed banana. She will eat nearly 80-95% of the special foods during a chunk of the day.

she has pooped 2-3x each day in the crate since the bath. I just finished searching the green poop and came back with basically she might not be eating enough. And... I just realized she hasn’t had access to grit in 4 days now. I will get her a small bowl of it post haste. Must finish this post 1st.

so here are a few pics:
From 4/8 the afternoon I found her (3 pics before I slathered triple antibiotic all over her exposed skin & into the punctures)

and now for today’s two poops

And now for her current weight (I don’t think she has lost much of any real weight in 8 days)

so there ya have all data and facts I can recall and share.

thoughts on the possible gleet- poop?

I will be giving her skin a fresh coating of triple antibiotic later tonight. It will be ~1.5 days since last slathering.

2) do I need to share an update close up on the skins healing?

3) I’m going to add some wheat germ I actually have in the fridge and use warm water to make a “mashed crumble” mixup tonight as well. Any other suggestions?

She has lost a few ounces if I read the scale correctly the first time from last night. Not quite 1/4 pound less?

so yesterday we know she ate 5x. 2x for me & 3x for DS, while I was away. Yesterday she pooped at least 3x that I could tell.

still the same “gleet looking” but, she is getting and voluntarily eating spinach in the yogurt. I’m even mixing in the crumble with hot water “looks like oatmeal” and I even put chick-grit in it and she kept going.... she is drinking some.

quantity of food she ate at ~10-11PM last night is about 1/8 to 1/4 cup of all list in the above paragraph. Gonna go see how much I can get her to eat in just a few minutes.

@Ursuline Chick any wisdom or suggested “tags”?

Update Thursday night, she is holding steady at 4 1-4 lbs on the scale. Still has the green stuff in her poop. Still has those significant puncture holes that are healing slowly and staying clean. She is eating little bits all day long and also drinking some as well. She definitely has a detectable limp. She is routinely getting up and moving about. Inevitably ends up facing the back corner of crate several times a day.

I’m still worried about the continued stinky, green and white poop but, it is getting a lot less watery.
also- she has maintained her weight and continues to eat a steady amount. And her quantity of poops today is more then yesterday and it’s only 6:24PM. (Because I clean out the piddle pads routinely, this allows for quantifying and knowing how many times she had pooped each day.
Today and other first. She has walked around the crate a lot and has been standing every times I have come in to check on her and the chickies.

I will likely weigh her late tonight as well. Here she is currently:

Update. Yesterday she had mites returned(likely eggs hatched on her).... got a serious bath again. Before the bath as she had been doing a lot of standing in the crate, sat her outside in small yard solo while I prepared the wash totes... she walked all over the place & never sat down.

her weight has stayed the same 4 1/4 - 4 1-2 lbs all week.

her poop is almost no green yueckiness. She is starting to eat the dry crumble again too.

she has started sprouting a gazillion feathers already too. Scabs are almost done, 2 of 4 holes covered over. The 2 biggest are still closing over.

Adding 5 detail pics of healing status:

top right is I think #3 hole sealed up and middle to left are all new feathers

This is hole #4(the worst) and it’s healing slow & steadily I believe anyways. Down next to my finger nails are the almost completely scab done area behind the right wing (facing her)

this is a different angle for #3 and you can see at bottom many feather from the back side of left wing (facing her) as well as the scab lifting away and the fresh pinkish flesh showing up.

this is all those up her neck that started sprouting this week as well.

this is under left wing (facing her) and that matted mess IS the scab that is already lifting away but, not yet ready to fall off. The scab itself is approx the size of a quarter and a dime next to it.

Happy update, sheesh 14+ days later... today is Mother’s Day. The red hen is still improving steadily. Her first layer of scabbing has all come off and the next scab has also in spots come off. 2 of the 4 puncture spots are almost totally sealed over. One had a “pin hole” that I squeezes triple antibiotic into and it looks about ready to peak away any day now.

the other two are still filling in slowly. The largest is still slowly healing. That scab is also likely to come off again for a fresh layer to take over soon as well. Her feathers are really showing up in mass too.
Admittedly she has pecked at a couple spots and they have super small fresh scabs. Nothing to worry over thankfully though.

I’ll try to snag daylight pics tomorrow and put her on the scale for a fresh update.

she has had a lot of more normal poop and a few very runny brown splats. Still has the white and green specks at least once a day too.
