This is my first year owning chickens... My girls are about a year old and they did molt (I think? Fluffy new feathers coming in) but I’m concerned with what the heck is going on with my girl, Blackberry. She’s the worst, and others have some mild redness and feather loss but hers is SO RED. It gets less red when she’s relaxing but we just chased her around the yard so now it’s super red looking. I looked for mites and bugs, I see nothing. I have been spraying with vetericyn just trying to keep it clean. They also had the diarrhea because I think I gave them too much lettuce and melon on accident and it’s too cold to bathe them. I am unsure what I can do to help her and the ones that have similar issues. Feather plucking? Bugs? Parasites? I read parasites could cause diarrhea too and this sort of issue but I’m unsure how I can tell if they have something going on. I feel awful because I don’t know if this is normal molting or I’m missing something.

It looks like someone is pulling out her feathers. Feather picking can happen if they are bored or not getting out to free range, if they are overcrowded, or not getting enough protein in their diet. They should get mostly a 16% layer or 20% all flock feed, and limit any treats which can dilute the amount of protein they get. When they eat feathers they may be wanting mire protein.

I added ladders in there, I give them cabbage, they have a xylophone and logs to jump on. I don’t let them free range unless we’re out there because we have a lot aerial predators. I try to let them out for a few hours daily but they won’t come out if there’s snow on the ground lol. I have seen some of them eating feathers. I may need to stop treats for a while. Is there anything I can give them to up the protein for them?
