If you end up putting back the other light could you use a lower wattage one, maybe then they will be less likely to jump down off of their roost?

I wonder if with the red light they cannot see as well and think that anything that touches them is going to eat them? My chickens do not peck me during the day but at night if I touch them they will peck me.

I have a 7 watt clear bulb in my coop. I leave it on 24/7 as it is so dim. But then when I go check on them I can see and if they get disturbed they can see to get back. It is actually called a nightlight bulb.
