I went to clear out my chicken's run this morning and when I lifted up the nest box it was practically ALIVE with little bugs. They are about 1.5-2mm is length and are black with a reddish tinge (I would say dark red, but they are practically black), and are kind of oval in shape. The smaller ones are bright red. I tipped out the sawdust and the bugs kind of disappeared but I think they have just hidden. I haven't checked the rest of the house but I'm worried it might be really bad.
I have two houses and will check both of them for these bugs.
Can someone tell me what they might be and how to treat them?
The only problem I have is that one of the houses is a broody house where my hen (a wyandotte/pekin cross with her 4 little heinz 57 babies) and her chicks are staying until Christmas. So I need something for that house that won't be dangerous for the babies.
