Usually it is because someone told them that it deters rats or squirrels. It doesn't.

I have heard they cannot taste it so it does not hurt them. Agsin I do not know if that is true. @azygous, thoughts?

Years ago my mom was frustrated with the squirrels raiding her expensive bird feeders. She bought some of the seed that had hot pepper flakes in it to deter them. The songbirds wouldn’t touch it. She gave up and put regular seed back in her feeders & the song birds came back. I believe they can taste it! I saw how they stopped feeding.

Also when I give my flock the trimmings from plain bell peppers they won’t eat it. There’s something about them that they just don’t like. You don’t have to be an expert to see how they react to what you feed them. My birds don’t like peppers; I don’t feed them peppers. I know they aren’t supposed to be able to taste it but I can’t ignore what I’ve seen with my own eyes.

My birds won’t eat it. Don’t mean to be argumentative but I do have to be honest.
