Hello....I am having a problem with my male guinea's feet. They (two naughty males) used to be housed with the chickens, but they started to chase them, so now they live in an adjacent pen....they did not like being separated, so they pace the fence alot and have created a very muddy "runway." I think I have remedied the mud problem...unfortunately I let it go, thinking "oh, well, it is just mud", and now one has a nasty broken toenail and purplish/red sores on the bottom of his feet. Also, his scales are elongated on the tips of some of his toes and almost look like tiny quills. His feet are thickened and calloused in areas, from the constant running and some of the callouses are purplish/cracked. The tops of the feet, other than the broken toenail area, look healthy. The other guinea has a few tiny little areas of concern, but appears to be in pretty good shape, and the hen that lives with them doesn't pace and has no apparent problems. Does anyone have any ideas for treatment? I have been soaking the feet with warm salt water for the past week and he is being crated in a nice cozy spot in my garage. I also initially removed mud that was cemented around the broken toenail and pulled off the blackish scabby area. I've been packing the nail with sugar/betadine and bandaging it up. There was a little clear/slightly bloody and slighty thickened discharge from around the nail when I pulled off the scab, but it seems to be looking (and feeling by the looks of it) a bit better and there is no discharge. I can see new shiny healthy nails coming in on his other toes and maybe a little on the broken one, but I don't know if the purple spots and enlarged scales are improving much. Is this some kind of rot/fungus or bacterial problem? Any help would be appreciated. Thanks

I wish i could help.. It sounds like you are doing a great job right now.. I would try to get a new pic so folks can see how he improving and maybe some others can chiime in...

Thanks for your reply...I coated his feet with vaseline a couple of times thinking it might soften up the callouses or smother a fungal problem and today when I took him out most of the reddish purple spots had turned brown. I think they are starting to heal up. The toenail is still nasty, and I am not sure if it is going to grow out or not.
