I have a friend who just bought red ranger chicks. They should be almost 2 weeks old. She called me over to examine one and try to sex it. All four chicks were them, same size when they were bought this past Saturday. However, one of them suspected as a rooster, has grown to twice the size as the other three, has stockier legs and a larger comb. Does any one have experience with this breed and/ or is this assumption about its sex possibly true?

its possible yes. when the get their neck feathers you can find out for sure. the males will be pointed and the female more rounded at the ends. but tell me, i thought these were eating birds?

Yes I know all about the hackle and saddle feathers. We were more curious as to why this chick is double the size of the rest when they are equally treated and equally aged. Yes, rangers are alternative meat birds to Cornish. My friend likes red birds and our local feed store had these available.
