Hey Everyone!

This is our first time raising chickens, and we just put out our 5 week old chickens in their coop outside this week. We just found two sores, one on each side of her head/neck, on our lavender Orpington. Should we separate her? The blood/sore has dried. It seems inflamed and raised. She is one of the smaller of the 14 chicks we have. Should we be concerned?

Can you spend time with them and see who is pecking her? Are they all the same age. What breeds are they besides Orpington? That little comb is prominent isn’t it? It is helpful to keep her near the others, but we don’t want her hurt. They will peck at the red color of blood. I would spray a little BluKote or dab on some povidone iodine to color the red blue or brown. Blue food coloring applied with your finger may work. Something I do with a chick who needs separated temporarily is to use some netting or screen wire to separate the one with her own food and water. They sell bird netting and plastic chicken wire at feed store, Lowe’s or Home Depot that can be stapled or attached to things temporarily.

Thank you! We have 9 australorps, 2 Easter eggers and 2 cinnamon queens. They’re all about within a week of each other in age. We just let them out of the coop for a bit and she was acting naturally and fine.
