Well, I just went in to do a head count now that everyone had gone to roost...and my little black australorp is hatching chicks. She had some eggs and she took some red star eggs three weeks ago. The daddy to them all is McSteamy...my light brahma roo. So I will see how many she has in the morning and probably take them away from her since we have kittens out there who are about 8 or 9 weeks old and might decide to dine on them~ They are safe from kittens right now in the coop. So far one yellow chick and one that seems to be brownish with markings on it's head. I will take pictures of them tomorrow.

Ok, She, (Bailey)tried to peck me to death but I managed to quickly take her off the nest so I could get a photo of the chicks who had hatched already. She was not happy with me but that's ok, I want her protective.

Here are the new chicks at 12 days old today. They had a small excursion outside the coop but mama took them back in. So I decided to put them back into their little pen inside the coop. Boy did mama go after me when she thought I was going to hurt those babies. I didn't take time to change the settings on my camera so they aren't really good photos.
