I have 10 hens 9 months old and lately when I crack open an egg we have a one layer giving us a reddish smear in the yoke. It is not blood specs but sort of smeared through the yoke . Can you explain what this is ? We are hesitate to eat them until we figure this out.

I have a welsummer who did that every day for months, then occasionally, now no eggs at 18 months. The eggs are perfectly fine to eat, but gross me out, so I just fed them to chickens. She laid super dark brown eggs so I could tell them apart.

Thanks for the reply but it is not specs of blood like your photo. This is more when we bust the yoke it has a reddish smear in it , not specks , any idea ?

Yes thank you very much , I think that is exactly what it looks like . Are food is keep in a cool dry place so its not the food . We are going to watch for the other things to see what is causing it , but anyway thank you so much for your help
