Hi I am new to BYC this may have been asked loads but I can't find anything. I have 8 ladies the first 3 for approx 2 1/2 years. After adding the next 4 we suddenly had no grass left just a muddy mess. After some research we built frames to cover the lawn (about 6/7 inches up from the floor) this has allowed us to re seed and the grass grows up and through the wire but the frames are cumbersome and ugly.

We also have guinea pigs who love to graze the grass and the frames make this very difficult too.

Question is can I put wire straight onto the lawn, so the grass grows through? This way the chickens can nip off the tops but not scratch put the roots.

Any one see a problem with this or have any other ideas? please discuss...

Thank you

I would be afraid of what would happen if the lawnmower snagged a bit of the wire. IMO, the mental image of that would make it not worth my while. How big is your yard? Do you have space to give them a fenced in run? If so, you could heavily mulch the run, and let them out for supervised ranging on the lawn, and put them back in before they get to the point of exposing the roots.

Yes that's what I thought they have an 10x10 run but I like th out and about. Seems to only take seconds when they all get going. Yard is about 25x35 total very small by US standards - average In My part of the uk sadly
