refrigerator/freezer clean out

now that i realize (duh) from this board that meat is okay for chickens, then they'll get a litlte that would otherwise go to cat or dogs.

so, they got a good clean out on thanksgiving day and tomorrow, another.

found a whole bag of old shrinked potatos. they seem to like them better cooked. so tossed in microwave. old hamburger and the grease, too. then just various odd things.

this morning, my goat esepcialy liked the overgrown squash from a nighobr i'd tossed in the freezer mid summer. still a little bit of that left for tomorrow. he ate it like candy. i thnk he liked the juicy thawedoutness of it best. like watermelon to him.

i toss the meat bits usually to the skinny chciken. who i've called that enough that she is a little less skinny and actually knows her name. lol.

have you cleaned your fridge lately and tossed to teh chickies?

so, wound up with three big bags of stuff. they will love. including some watermelon. old grapes. the only thing i had to much heart to toss in their was old gum. lol.

the only old goat that eats that is me.

i can see my granny smiling down on me from up in the sky tickled both that i cleaned my fridge AND that i fed the chickens doing it. a very pragmatic gal, she was.

My girls love it when I dig out the leftovers! Today's haul was canned corn, stale cereal, meatballs, broccoli trimmings, old apple pie, and wilted salad greens. Yummy!!

I'm sure there's some old stuff in the freezer that could go, too. I think I will tie some pieces of freezer-burned meat up on a string so they can jump for it - keep 'em busy for a while.

my duck would kill for canned corn. it's crack. maybe that's where the song jimmy crack corn came from.

never thought of putting it on a string...hmm...... like a circus. lol

i am still a couple days til payday and it is getting chilly. so i put together a lot of fridge stuff and they just loved it! i had old dried roses i had out in religious type arrangements that had gotten too messy in the past couple months. homegrown, so organic. impulsively, i mixed that in with old hamburger, old water melon complete with rind and baked potatos. they LOVED it. maybe the vitamin c in rose petals. or the color? who knows.

Do you think some tomatoes I froze 3-4 years ago would be OK for the birds? I cannot imagine anything bad could have affected them in the freezer. They aren't even freezer burned.

i have mixed tomatos in with their stuff before, both frozen and fresh. i don't remember if it was their favorite thing, but they didn't turn red afterwards, either.

i would go for it, not probably too likely to eat it yourslef and better than going to waste.

i hope to be getting a deepfreeze soon. used to have one years back, but now with a new place have to rebuy everything. anyway. i'm sure i'll be in your sitatuion soon.......uh,yeah, this weird thing from five years ago that was so important.........uh..........give it to the chickens. or the goats. or the geese. or the dogs, now THEY'LL eat anyting.

Wow am I a Fool! I paid 98 cents a pound Yesterday for a Squash (for the chicks) that I knew they would love... I guess I am one of those Pet people that makes the pet industry a multi billion dollar money maker, I am new at this Chicken raising thing, but I am Educate-able! Ha! I love the idea of hanging stuff for them. I will try it!

If you are a fool than so am I. Dh says the chickens eat better than we do. 2 tubes of crickets every Saturday 7.50 1 container of organic yogurt a week 3.50. 1 bag of spinach a week 4.00 oatmeal with raisins every day. what I've got is spoiled chickens, but their worth every penny.

i make the pet industry money, too, but with my chihuahuas. i make homemade whole wheat flour biscuits that are totally human consumable, but i wouldn't, for dogs. used to sell them actually. for way too much money. lol. to people just like me.

i can't afford to buy organic stuff for the animals, but i've grown organic stuff my whole life and they definitely benefit from that. mine eat pretty similar stuff except the yogurt, just as leftovers. i'm not a yogurt person, though i have actually brought some home from friends houses for the chickens once i saw on here they would eat it.

they ate grasshoppers all this summer and i caught some to to try to raise over winter but that did't work out very well.

so, probably similar ideals, just different pocketbooks.
